Sunday Supper - Mom's Root Stew

My Mom makes this root stew all the time.. and now I do as well.  She found it in an old cookbook and made some adjustments in quantities.  My OH Mike loves it.. it's one of his favorites!  Especially this time of year when it gets cold.

Stewing beef - browned and coated with flour
Couple of large potatoes - peeled, washed and diced
Large sweet potato - peeled, washed and diced
Large onion - peeled and diced
Medium size turnip - peeled, washed and diced (I use frozen if I can't find any at the grocery store)
Couple of large carrots - peeled, washed and diced
Salt & Pepper to taste
1/2 cup of ketchup

Simmer on the stove for a few hours until all veggies are soft and to your liking.  I usually cook for about 2-3 hours.

This stew freezes well, I usually package up half of what I make in portion sizes and stick them in the freezer for quick meals later on.

  1. sounds yummy and I don't normally like stew, but maybe because it's not really a gravy stew? I might have to make this. :) Do you make it in a crockpot or on the stove?

  2. I do mine on the stove. You could do it in a crock pot, but it would have to probably cook all day.

  3. We have a similar recipe but use tomato juice or V-8 juice for the liquid.
